Thus, one should think of purchasing a steel shelving unit with high storage capacity. The shelves should be of steel or any other metal instead of the wooden shelves or plastic shelves. One can either prefer for one single unit or can join the different parts of the bays together to create an ideal storage space. The steel shelving units can be used in homes, garages, sheds and also in the workshop or any other place where you need to store some or the other items.

Material

The material of the shelves is the most important thing to consider while buying a shelf unit. One can choose from various materials such as steel, wood, and other shelves that suit the need and purpose of the room. The different types of materials for constructing shelves are:

  • Chrome wire:Chrome plated shelving unit are used for dry storage or used in the heated environments such as garages, stockrooms, warehouses, and in retail stores. This type of  shelving has increased visibility and adequate ventilation. However, the chrome wire shelves may or may not have a clear epoxy coating, and can rust if used in humid environments.
  • Epoxy coated shelves:The shelves with the epoxy coating are resistant to the humid environment such as ware washing, walk-in coolers, and even moist storage. The two most common colors of the epoxy coated shelving unit are black and green epoxy coated wire shelving units.
  • Polypropylene/ polymer:These shelving units are resistant to corrosion and are rust free even if salt water or sea air is present. The unit is prepared with a thick metal and covered with a polypropylene or polymer and increases their durability. The components of the polypropylene units are dishwasher safe and can be easily cleaned.
  • Antimicrobial:The shelves having the anti – microbial property can be made of any material. The protective layer prevents the growth of bacteria, mold, fungi, and mildew that can contaminate the food and cause anunpleasantodor.

Shelves

The shelves come in different sizes and heights and widths that one can choose from. The shelves could be of following types:
  • Solid Shelves:The solid shelves have no openings or holes on the surface so any type and size of product or item can be stored. There is no risk of slippage and they are easy to clean.
  • Vented Shelves:These are the best suited for cold storage units. There is proper air circulation in the vented shelves and thus the shelf life of the product is long. However, these shelves are difficult to clean.
  • Triangle Shelves:These are best suited for fitting in the tight corners to avoid losing any valuable storage space. This is mostly used in areas where the storage space is less.

Posts

There are two types of posts that are available for shelves:
  • Stationary: These are not designed for transport. These are best suited for areas that are used only for storage and are not rearranged and transported.
  • Mobile: These are movable shelves as the name suggests. The cleaning behind the shelves is easier with mobile posts compared to the stationary posts.
